Mosul University Presidency has selected Professor Dr. Abdul Karim Hussein Ismail, Dean of Al-Mamoun University College, as the Chairman of the Master's Thesis Defense Committee for student (Zainab Zuhair Jerjis).

On Tuesday, September 17, 2024, student Zainab Zuhair Jerjis successfully defended her Master's thesis titled: "Study of Physiological and Histopathological Changes in Some Organs of Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) Exposed to Cobalt Chloride". The defense was attended by the Assistant President of the University for Scientific Affairs, Professor Dr. Munir Salem Taha, the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Qais Ismail Ibrahim, the Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs, Assistant Professor Dr. Yasser Yahya Qasim, and a number of faculty members from the department.

Presented by student Jerjis from the Department of Life Sciences, the study addressed the identification of physiological and histopathological effects of cobalt chloride (COCl2.6H2O) on some organs of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). The required concentrations of cobalt chloride were selected based on the median lethal dose (LD50) test for 96 hours. The birds were obtained from the College of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Mosul at 22 days of age. The study period lasted 30 days, with 100 birds randomly distributed in cages equipped with all suitable environmental requirements, at a rate of 25 birds per group, in four experimental groups. The groups were dosed with cobalt chloride at concentrations of 30, 50, and 70 mg/kg dry weight, while the fourth group (control group) was dosed with distilled water only, at the same time daily.

Bird dissection was performed during the specified periods (5, 15, and 30 days), with 3 replicates for each period and each concentration after anesthetizing them using chloroform. Some experiments were conducted on the birds' blood, while others were performed on tissues of certain organs. The results of the experiments showed a significant increase in red blood cell count, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, white blood cells, and neutrophils for all concentrations during the periods of 15 and 30 days compared to the control groups.

The defense committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Abdul Karim Hussein Ismail, with membership including Professor Dr. Nuha Salim Mohammed Ali, Assistant Professor Dr. Baydaa Abdul Aziz Mohammed Saleh, and under the supervision and membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Amal Abdul Ilah Younis. The Master's thesis was accepted, so congratulations to the student and supervisor on this scientific achievement.
