Under the patronage of the esteemed Dean, Professor Dr. Abdul Karim Hussein Ismail, the Continuing Education and Scientific Development Division at Al-Mamoun University College, in cooperation with the Iraq High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR), held a scientific symposium entitled "Combatting Violent Extremism Leading to Terrorism to Promote Peaceful Coexistence and Tolerance in Society". The symposium was chaired by Dr. Atheer Natiq Muhammad from (IHCHR)–National Office, and attended by several faculty members and students.

In his remarks, Professor Ismail emphasized the importance of the symposium, which highlighted our duties to prevent and combat violent extremism leading to terrorism—a priority in Iraq. This necessitates adopting an integrated approach to addressing violent extremism to ensure sustainable societal solutions. He noted that tackling the factors contributing to economic marginalization and inequality, alongside providing mental health care programs and livelihood opportunities, are key to shielding individuals from the dangers of violent extremism. He further clarified that violent extremism in Iraq has caused widespread destruction and mass displacement, disproportionately affecting marginalized societal groups such as women, children, youth, and persons with disabilities.

As part of efforts to build peace and mitigate factors forcing people to flee their regions or home countries, Iraq must be supported in its governmental and societal approach to addressing motives that may exacerbate the risks of violent extremism. This includes backing national and local governmental entities, as well as civil society, to develop and implement strategies, plans, and interventions to counter these motives.
