In line with the directives of His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the recommendations of the Scientific Supervision and Evaluation Authority, Division of Assurance, Quality and University Performance in Al-Mamoon University College organized a workshop entitled (The Phenomenon of Terrorism and Extremism: Its Impacts on Society and Effective Means to Combat It).
The workshop, held under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Abdul Karim Hussein Ismail, Dean of Al-Mamoon University College, was led by Dr. Athir Natiq Muhammad and Mr. Akram Akeelah Dawoud. It brought together heads of scientific departments, department secretaries, instructors, and other participants to engage in discussions and exchange ideas on combating terrorism and extremism.
The speakers emphasized that terrorism aims to intimidate or coerce individuals or governments through threats or violence, leading to fatalities, serious injuries, or hostage-taking. They stressed the importance of preventing such acts, disrupting terrorist networks' funding, and countering their movements and activities in order to safeguard human rights in the future, and ensure justice for victims. They also recognized the crucial role of victims of terrorism and extremism in building resilient and empowered communities.
Terrorism and violent extremism violate the human rights and fundamental freedoms of individuals and groups. However, states define terrorism in various and sometimes ambiguous ways, necessitating consistent local legislation that safeguards human rights.
